I recently read the following text in the book Co-Intelligence by Ethan Mollick.
“You are not only a human, but also a cyborg. You are a cyborg because you use machines to enhance your abilities and extend your senses. You use computers to store and process information, phones to communicate and connect, cameras to capture and share images, and so on. You rely on machines to perform tasks and solve problems you cannot do by yourself.”
If I read this text anywhere, I would say it’s not written by AI. However, Mollick says it’s entirely created by AI, word by word, during a conversation.
As much as I don’t think AI is sentient, AI can form arguments (in a way), the ones that I haven’t even thought about before.
I have never considered myself a cyborg. When I think of a cyborg, RoboCop or Darth Vader comes to mind (or Inspector Gadget or even Stephen Hawking).
Yet, the AI is right. We actually became cyborgs when you think about it. Especially with the addition of artificial intelligence tools to our inventory, we started enhancing our abilities even further.
When I ask an AI to perform a thing for me that I can’t do it myself, how does it differ from Inspector Gadget adding or removing a new gadget on his hat? I think it is the same.
So, yes. We are cyborgs AND we can learn from a machine.
