Can you explain how you manage your team?

If somebody asks you how you manage your team, you have to be able to explain it to them clearly.

“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” — Maslow’s hammer.

That means you must have a goal, strategy, tactics, methodologies, mental models, and many more in your toolbelt and know how to use them.

If you answer, “I set up processes and let them do their jobs,” you are wrong.

Yes, ensuring the team has correct processes is your job.

Yes, letting them do their jobs is also a good step.

But there are more.

If doing individual contributor work brought you success and helped you become a manager, you can’t keep doing the same. You have to read a lot of books and/or articles, watch videos, and/or listen to podcasts. You have to take the time to learn the leadership craft.

So, how do you manage your team?
